YBN Cordae is here releasing his debut album The Lost Boy a 15 track project full of some big name features such as Pusha T, Meek Mill and Ty Dolla $ign. YBN dropped this project just in time to rap up his The Lost Boy Tour at Lollapalooza in Chicago.
“Wintertime” one of my favorite tracks of the project has an old school vibe having some Jazz sounds. The Jazz vibes are definitely a trace back to his home state of North Carolina where Jazz music played a huge part in the 1960s producing some of Jazz biggest names. YBN has a very serious tone during the verse showing off his wordplay and strong talent.
"Have Mercy” has the very popular flute sounds that many artist use. The hook is definitely catchy perfect for some Instagram captions. The production on this song is definitely up there with some great keys and kicks. YBN has no problem flowing along with the flute-esque sound.
“Sweet Lawd” is a very different track from the first two tracks. YBN is reciting the same hook from Have Mercy. The track gives me some vibes of Kanye with the church choir in the back vocals. I love the passion and gospel sound it has.
“Bad Idea” Although i am not a fan of Chance the Rapper it is still a great song. The track transitions perfectly from Sweet Lawd showing off the production skills. Another gospel atmosphere with some new school kicks and sounds is mixed to definitely satisfy the ears of the listener. Chance and YBN murder the sounds with some incredible verses.
“Thanksgiving” I fell in love with this song because as soon as i heard the hi hats because it reminded me of Kanye West College Dropout . The song is definitely another summertime warm vibes but gives you the feeling of Thanksgiving day surrounded by family and loved ones. I am curious on the sample flip.. very interesting choice.
“RNP” Anderson .Paak is a name i have not heard in a while but definitely a refreshing sound to hear. The beat is completely insane Anderson provides an amazing flow to go write along with the beat. YBN joins in showing off he has multiple flows and isn’t scared to dance around the line. Both artist have an inspirational tone in their voices. During the second verse YBN and Anderson bounce back in forth on the verse. I will definitely be tweeting at both for a joint album soon.
“Broke as Fuck (Freestyle) “ Storytelling is one of my favorite type of verses and YBN is no amateur when it comes to painting an image in our mind. YBN really goes deep and tells us about many real life situations he has dealt with. I love when artist have honest raps and have us dive into their mind. The beat switch is another example of the production being one of the best.
“Thousand Words” Halfway through the project YBN slows it down again but not slowing down his flow. YBN talks about how social media has taken control of our lives and we live for the likes. “The lifestyle you advertised…” goes to show that many people portray a different life on social media. This track is definitely YBN trying to give us a message.
“Way Back Home” Ty Dolla is definitely one of those artist that leave you in a feel good mood. The sounds are uplifting and the melodies that both artist provide for us flow together just right. The whole track has a warmth and passionate vibe to it giving the user a nice mellow flow.
“Grandma’s House” This is a very interesting track i’m not sure if this is a feature from a member of YBN family but YBN provides back vocals for the female voice. Soulful and Gospel vibe is given in this short interlude but still a nice addition to the project.
“Been Around” This track starts with YBN interviewing someone from chicago, he references his project name by asking about being a lost boy. The production has a nice Chicago sound and soul mixed with Cordae rap flow. Another picture painter for our minds to indulge in. I really enjoy the story telling YBN treats us with.
“Nightmares Are Real” I have been waiting to listen to this track ever since i saw who was featured on it. Cordae tells the story of how he started his career in music with his mom kicking him out. The whole track YBN has a strong flow and amazing harmony and hooks. Pusha T blesses us with a speaker igniting feature. The emcee reminds us that he should not be taken lightly and if he touches any track you should pay attention.
“Family Matters” Arin Ray is a name i do not know but made me do some research because the feature definitely is appreciated. The hook Arin provides is another gospel sound that we see throughout the album. Cordae turns into a writer by giving us information of each family member detailing them with a amazing flow along the production .
“We Gon Make It” The Dream Chaser Meek Mill starts of the track with some inspirational words for us telling us to never stop chasing our dreams. This song is definitely another inspirational song with both artist telling us of their struggles on the rise to fame. This track makes you want to get out of your seat and conquer the world. Definitely added to playlist.
“Lost & Found” Cordae finishes off his project with a victory lap. The beat has big passionate sounds with Cordae showing off a flow that reminds me of Trinidad James. He shouts out XXXtentacion calling him the pac of our time.
The Lost Boy 15 tracks and not a single one of the songs is a filler. Jam packed with variety of different types of sounds Cordae shows us he is comfortable in many environments. As a debut album Cordae is definitely here to engrave his name into the earth and i am excited to see what he will bring us next.
